Where can I buy paper Savings Bonds?
As of January 1, 2012, paper savings bonds are no longer sold at financial institutions, including Mid Penn Bank. But savings bonds are not going away. Electronic savings bonds in Series EE and I will remain available through purchase at TreasuryDirect.
How do I purchase electronic U.S. Savings Bonds online?
The government now encourages people to buy U.S. Savings Bonds on its TreasuryDirect website. No paper bonds are issued. You have access to your account 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Opening a TreasuryDirect account is free, and, once it's established, investors can:
Series I paper savings bonds remain available for purchase using part or all of one's tax refund. For more information on this feature, visit www.irs.gov.
Can I still redeem my paper savings bonds at Mid Penn Bank?
Yes. Those currently holding paper savings bonds can continue to redeem them at Mid Penn Bank. Bonds, which have not matured, but were lost, stolen or destroyed, can be reissued in paper or electronic form.
What information will I need to give a savings bond as a gift?
To give an electronic Savings Bond, you must know the recipient's:
When the bond is delivered to the recipient's TreasuryDirect account, he or she will receive a notification email.
You must be 18 years or older to create a TreasuryDirect account and to buy gift bonds. A child under age 18 can get gift deliveries in a Minor Linked Account.
